- The Winmodem is a controllerless modem. This means that it will
- only run if it has the proper drivers loaded into memory and the host CPU
- is doing some all the task normally performed by the modems controller.
- It's somewhat similar to RPI, except that RPI modems will work without
- error control when no drivers are loaded, while the Winmodem won't work at
- all unless the drivers are in memory. As the name suggests, the drivers
- are ONLY avilible for Windows (3.xx or 95), and will ONLY work in a
- Windows com program (they won't even work in a DOS program been run in
- windows). They aren't $200 cheaper then the Sportster (unless you're
- talking something other then US$), only about $40 cheaper. Reason being
- the lack of some parts in the modem reduces the cost. As for actual
- performance, they should be identicle to one of the new Sportsters with
- the 33.6 v.34 support turned off.
